I’m Single, Not Divorced
This one has been on my mind for a while. Why do information forms need to know my marital status? Like seriously…it makes sense for insurance purposes or taxes or school safety and counseling. But it feels like people just want to be nosy. I’ve yet to see the benefit of checking Single, Married, Separated, or Divorced on basic information forms.
By default, if I’m divorced, I’m not married. And if I’m not married, I’m single. So Single is the box I will check going forward. The term ‘divorced’ comes with so many preconceived notions and judgments. Divorce does not define who I am on a daily basis. I will not attach the word to myself on forms that will be filed for all eternity.
Don’t get me wrong. If divorce discounts ever become a thing, I will gladly check that box. Until then, I’m SINGLE!
